After much review, I decided to purchase the Garrett ACE 350 to start my Metal Detecting Hobby. This machine is awesome and accurately identifies what's below it. The DD coil is very useful in pinpointing the location of the object. I would recommend this product to any beginner or novice in the field. No need to spend over $300 if it's just going to be a hobby. This will do the trick.

This metal detector is at the "sweet spot" in this category. It is more powerful, accurate, and informative than the special-of-the week units at stores; at the same time it is far less expensive than many middle of the road detectors.
Good balance and low overall weight are crucial, if you are going to be seeking finds for any extended period of time--the Ace 350 is very good in both areas. Having a good audible alarm is also important, especially if you are covering irregular ground.
In the sub-$500 range, this is a best buy.

so, im new too the metal detecting world and it is a wonderful hobby 1st day out i found some cool stuff from old shotgun shells to some coins beats sitting around the house, but anyway the ace 350 is a pretty cool machine at first i was about to give up because i was digging for nothing until i sat down and read the book and cranked down my sensitivity and narrowed my choices down on digging due to a lot of iron by me. Being new i can not really compare it but i would say that in dirt/gravel and mud it did a pretty good job. overall i am very satisfied and can not wait to go back out.
