I recently purchased a Bounty Hunter Discovery 2200 metal detector to locate the old surveyor's pins that mark the corners of my property.

The unit arrived on time and in good shape; was easy to assemble; has a nice display; and is sturdy, light weight, and easy to operate. However, it isn't giving me the results I need.

Not having used a metal detector before, I first tried the default settings. The surveyor's pins are made of metal, presumably galvanized iron or steel. Unfortunately, so are nails, screws, bolts, nuts, washers, and other hardware. And it seems my whole yard is filled with rusty hardware!

To "calibrate" the detector, I buried a piece of half-inch galvanized iron pipe straight up and down about six inches below the surface. The detector found it easily with the default settings.
